About the intervention

This research project is dedicated to improving antenatal care (ANC) attendance in Mali. Funded by the RSTMH Early Career Grant and supported by individual donors, the initiative focuses on delivering critical health information to expectant mothers through SMS and voice calls in French and local languages. The first prototype includes Bambara as the local language, with the potential to add more Malian languages, depending on available funding.

Empowering mothers with knowledge

Our system provides expectant mothers with vital information on their pregnancy, including weekly reminders for antenatal appointments, health tips, and medication instructions. By leveraging SMS and voice call technology, the intervention ensure that even those who cannot read can receive critical health information in their local language.

Community-driven development

This project is developed in close collaboration with local health centers, community members, and medical professionals like Dr. Drabo and Dr. Oumar Cissé and international partners like Savana Signatures. The SMS content and system preferences were determined through interactive workshops with women, ensuring that the system meets the real needs of the community. The project is supervised by Mats Malqvist from Uppsala University
